Navigating Change: UVA’s Push for Government Upskilling

The writing is on the wall: as the job market rapidly evolves, professionals must keep up. This is especially true in the government space.

UVA | Northern Virginia offers programs for working professionals in the DMV. With so many professionals here in the government space, several UVA | Northern Virginia programs are designed with these populations in mind. 

Upskilling, especially in a competitive market like the DMV, is critical to long-term professional success. According to The Seattle Times, “The change of pace requires today’s workers to continually upgrade their skills and knowledge to remain both competitive in the workplace and to help their respective organizations remain competitive.” The writing is on the wall: as the job market rapidly evolves, professionals must keep up. This is especially true in the government space.

According to the  U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 90,000 people in Northern Virginia are employed federally. “The government space is one of the largest, if not the largest, working sector in Northern Virginia. Behind this sector are skilled workers who deserve access to the best training and professional development programs in Northern Virginia. This is our why behind the UVA | Northern Virginia Elevate programs for government and government contractor workers.” explains Julie Sara Boyd, Executive Director of UVA | Northern Virginia.

UVA | Northern Virginia currently offers several programs for government and government contractors, including programs in partnership with the Defense Health Agency (DHA) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). “As our UVA footprint expands with the 55,000 square foot UVA Fairfax Campus opening February 2025, so will our program offerings for government and government contractor professionals,” shares Leanna Yevak, Assistant Director of Communication for UVA | Northern Virginia.

UVA | Northern Virginia offers the following programs to serve these populations:

  • Department of Defense Master Planning Institute: UVA | Northern Virginia, the UVA School of Architecture, and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are partnering to offer a Department of Defense Master Planning Institute in Northern Virginia. This Institute allows participants to become Military Master Planners through an innovative and immersive program that is the perfect blend of academic prowess and hands-on military planning expertise.
  • Customer Experience Leadership Institute: The Customer Experience Leadership Institute is a three-day program for practitioners who want to better understand the principles and practices of CX and how to apply them within the public sector.
  • Military and Government Professional Development Courses: In partnership with the Defense Health Agency (DHA), UVA | Northern Virginia is offering three online workshops covering essential leadership skills for military and government leaders.
