E4: Engineering for Human Health: A Dive into Biomedical Engineering
About the program
Biomedical Engineering is where creativity, technology, and passion come together to solve problems for human health. In this course, students will engage in the engineering mindsets and problem solving processes that biomedical engineers need to tackle today’s medical challenges to make tomorrow a healthier place.
Students will learn about various diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and cancer, as they develop their skills in coding, computational modeling, and teamwork to design new therapeutic approaches to treat these complex diseases. Students will learn about the cellular and molecular changes that cause the disease and how drugs are used for treatment. They will do research and run computational simulations to design improved treatments that can achieve even better patient outcomes or even cure the disease.
Students will practice defining and modeling a medical problem, researching relevant information to inform their solution, and working effectively with a team to engineer a solution. Students will also learn to effectively communicate their ideas to diverse audiences.
This class is part of E4 Exploring Exciting Engineering Essentials. The UVA School of Engineering and Applied Science has created a series of classes that can be taken individually or together to help aspiring engineers learn more about the foundations of engineering and what is possible when you apply the same framework to different topics.
Important Note: The price listed reflects early-bird pricing and will change on Sunday, March 1.
