Current Students, Alumni, Families, and Friends –

It’s a time of transition. We conclude one semester and roll into the summer – although that does not mean we are going dormant. For example, I spent time with a new Accelerated Master’s in System’s Engineering (AMP) cohort on Friday to learn more about them and why they have joined the program. Really cool group – folks from Space Force, Northrop Grumman, tech startups. One of the things I enjoy about those meetings is the energy of a new program and observing the class building from disparate individuals into a group of fellow travelers. Matt Burkett is shepherding the group over the coming months, and I’ve noticed makes a point to continue to bring back alumni of the program. Will look forward to seeing them around our halls.

Similarly, we had a gathering for the alumni of our Certificate in Facilitation. The program has built a loyal following, even though we just welcomed the first UVA | Northern Virginia cohort. We were thrilled by the enthusiasm, engagement, and leadership demonstrated by participants throughout the program – And Rae Ringel and her team. The success of this inaugural cohort has reinforced the importance of facilitation and collaborative leadership skills across sectors, and we are excited to welcome a second cohort this fall.

Another of the highlights of the semester was welcoming University President Scott Beardsley for a special visit and conversation with members of our community. Our new President has a great deal on his plate, and his attention and engagement underscored the importance of collaboration across the University and the growing visibility and impact of our work.

We were equally pleased to host our spring UVA Programs Fair in collaboration with more than ten schools and programs from across UVA Charlottesville. The event reflected the interdisciplinary spirit that increasingly shapes higher education and created valuable opportunities for students to explore new academic and professional pathways.

Another meaningful addition to the semester was the Connect Conversation Series, with a recent iteration in partnership with the Miller Center. February’s event, “Presidential Power, Performance, and Public Trust,” focused how the American presidency has changed in recent decades and what those shifts mean for democracy today. The Connect Series brings together leaders, practitioners, and students to engage with pressing public issues and foster thoughtful dialogue across disciplines and perspectives. Have an idea for a future topic or speaker, please let Julie Sara Boyd know, as she curates these talks.

Our location in the nation’s capital gives us several advantages, including a gateway to the world. were also honored to welcome the Honorable Ambassador Gustavo Leite of Paraguay for a special visit and exchange with our community. The Ambassador’s engagement us valuable perspectives and highlighted the importance of international collaboration and diplomacy in today’s interconnected world. Look for future programs from this relationship.

As we look ahead, we are already preparing for an exciting summer and fall. Our Inspire program begins on June 22, and we are looking forward to welcoming a new group of participants to campus. We still have a limited number of spots available, and we encourage prospective high school students and community members to learn more and apply.

Are you a UVA alumni and in need of an alternative work venue? We’ve launched our Alumni Co-Working Initiative, designed to strengthen connections among alumni while creating new opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and professional engagement. Reach out to Office Manager, Eren Agim, if you’re interested.

Finally, we are pleased to announce that our Career Fair will return on August 13, providing students and alumni with opportunities to connect with employers, expand professional networks, and explore new career pathways. Details to be announced this summer.

Thank you for your interest in what we do. Your continued support, partnership, and engagement. The accomplishments of this semester reflect the dedication and generosity of this entire community — students, alumni, families, faculty, staff, and friends alike. We are grateful for all you do to strengthen and advance our shared mission. A building is necessary, and insufficient to build community.

I wish you a rewarding summer, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish together in the months ahead. I am going to spend time with my family, especially my adult children – and in my gardens. I am not going to be on the road, so if you want to stop by and see us, send me a note.

Warm regards,

Greg Fairchild
