Meet Professor Alexa Genalo:

Q: Tell us about your journey into the world of Forensic Science and how you developed your expertise in the field?

A: My journey into Forensic Science first began when I was a sophomore in high school. I had to pick one last elective class to take that year, and when I couldn’t decide, my mom suggested I take the Forensic Science class that was offered. We watched NCIS together religiously (still do!), and she excited me by saying, “I could be Abby!” I ended up loving that class, which is how I decided I wanted to pursue Forensic Science in college. Fast forward to life as an undergraduate Forensic Science student at George Mason University— I struggled with what I actually wanted to do within the field. I loved the chemistry aspect of it, but I just didn’t know what type of job I wanted to pursue. I knew I wanted to do something related to lab work, so I decided to continue my education at George Mason. During my first semester in the Forensic Science Master’s Program, I took the Forensic Toxicology course that was taught by a Toxicologist from the Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS). I had my lightbulb moment in that class and realized the field of toxicology was where I belonged. While in grad school, I started working for DFS part-time in the toxicology section, and after I graduated with my Master’s, I eventually worked my way up to a full-time Forensic Scientist position in the Toxicology section. In that position, I was qualified to perform chemical and instrumental analyses on biological specimens to detect the presence of alcohol, drugs, and other chemicals.

Q: What knowledge and skills can students expect to learn in Forensic Science this summer?

A: Students can expect to learn all aspects of forensic science, from the crime scene to the lab and finally to the courtroom! Throughout the week, we’ll be exploring the various disciplines within forensic science and the role of forensic professionals in criminal investigations. Students will sharpen their observation skills, learn how to utilize microscopes in the analysis of evidence, and learn how to think like a forensic scientist!

Q: Do students need a background in Forensic Science to be successful in this class?

A: No! We encourage all students, regardless of their background, to take this course as forensic science is an interdisciplinary field.

Q: What advice do you have for students interested in taking Forensic Science this summer?

A: Do it! This week-long course is the perfect way to gain more information on Forensic Science in a fun and exam-free environment! Whether you’re a novice or a true crime junkie, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Q: What are you most looking forward to about Inspire this summer?

A: I’m most excited to meet the students and hopefully teach them something new about Forensic Science! I’m also really excited about the activities they’ll be doing throughout the course!
