"Inspire is a fulfilling experience that provides useful lessons for all aspects of life." -Iris

Iris is a driven high school sophomore, passionate about the fields of biology and pathology on a pre-med track. Currently, Iris is exploring summer volunteering opportunities and preparing for a future physician observership. In the upcoming school year, she plans to serve as a class representative at her school.

Q: What knowledge, skills, or lessons did you learn through your time in the program?

A: During my time in Inspire’s Forensics program, I learned new and interesting skills, such as fingerprinting and blood spatter analysis. I also gained more knowledge on the US Justice System through field trips and activities regarding criminal cases. Finally, I got to learn about the importance of science in the legal and judicial fields, as well as how forensics is actively being used today to exonerate the wrongfully convicted.

Q: Share a favorite memory, experience, or accomplishment from your time in Inspire.

A: My favorite memory from Inspire was visiting the Alexandria Detention Center. It was an eye-opening experience to see some of the legal aspects of forensics and criminal justice firsthand. Being able to visit the detention center was a rare opportunity that I am very grateful for, as I got to learn more about the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society and see what pursuing a career in forensics/criminal justice would look like.

Q: In what ways do the Inspire classes differ from other classes you have taken (either through high school, outside programs, camps, etc.)

A: Compared to high school classes and other programs, Inspire classes are much more hands-on and interactive. Through Inspire, I was able to learn and practice forensics techniques firsthand with resources that I would usually not have access to. I also got to bring some cool things home, such as a skull for a facial reconstruction project.

Q: What advice would you offer to new students as they begin their journey in the program?

A: I would encourage new Inspire students to come into their classes with an open mind. The fast-paced nature of Inspire, as well as some of the activities, may seem intimidating, but you can learn a lot from it. You also get to explore future careers that might interest you and make friends with other students with similar goals and interests. Inspire is a fulfilling experience that provides useful lessons for all aspects of life.
